Call for Book Chapters

Book title: Twice Exceptional (2e) Beyond Learning Disabilities
Subtitle: Gifted Persons with Physical Disabilities
Series title: Gifted Persons Facing Obstacles
Publisher: TBD

This book seeks to examine – and re-examine – different ways in which physical disabilities impact the lives of Gifted persons in academic, professional, and personal ways. Most of the existing literature about the Twice-Exceptional population focuses exclusively on Gifted students with learning disabilities. Little has been written about those with physical disabilities. To address this gap, this book will cover a range of physical disabilities, both those present at birth and those acquired subsequently. It will attempt to identify both commonalities and differences of experience as they apply across different types of disability. It will build on the early work by C. June Maker and Joanne Rand Whitmore Schwartz in their 1985 book, Intellectual Giftedness in Disabled Persons, extending it through more first-hand accounts as well as incorporation of more recent academic research.

Through the individual stories told and presented in this book, patterns and policies will be identified, with a view toward better supporting this under-studied, Twice Exceptional population in schools, careers, and daily life, as well as the professionals who work with them. There will be explicit attention paid to affective (emotional), intellectual, gender, and cultural issues and needs. We are seeking a mix of academic reviews and personal narratives. Predominantly, our authors will be writing from first-hand experiences to give voice to those whose stories may have not been told.
